Aquila is a family business founded in 1958, after humble beginnings in a small shoe factory in Melbourne, Australia. In Aquila’s early days the company only produced children’s shoes, but soon identified a shortage in the supply of quality men’s footwear which ultimately changed the company’s destiny.Response to the Aquila product was phenomenal and Aquila needed to expand operations. In 1965, Aquila opened a brand new factory in Brunswick Street, in the culturally diverse inner Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy. In 1966, the next generation of the family joined the company and Aquila was soon producing in excess of 100,000 pairs of shoes per year. Still only manufacturing and wholesaling its products, the company took the bold step of opening its own retail operations – in 1975 the first exclusive Aquila store opened in Melbourne’s CBD. The store proved successful and soon after, Sydney became home to Aquila’s second store.
Building a reputation for quality shoes with Italian styling and traditional construction techniques, the Aquila name became synonymous for well-crafted footwear. Over the next few decades expansion into retail across Australia continued steadily as fashion-conscious men caught onto t
In 2010 Aquila answered a growing need and launched its online store, initially shipping shoes and accessories to Australia and New Zealand, with countries in Asia, Europe and the US added as demand grew.
Seeing a desire for men to be able to create a complete coherent outfit without having to visit many stores, Aquila added mens clothing to its online product range in 2012, taking fashion cues from European style trends to create looks that complement the footwear range – again focusing on quality craftsmanship and detailing to create timeless pieces that will last from season to season. The clothing range is now also available from a number of retail stores and online.
Today, 56 years since the foundation of the company, a third generation of family members are hard at work continuing this legacy. Aquila now operates 24 retail stores nation-wide and is as proud of its rich heritage as its position as the leader in men’s fashion footwear in Australia.Scott and Mark own the most iconic shoe store in Melbourne. They represent a new form of retail, where personal, friendly service is key. They stock my shoes, too. A tailor who understands what a younger generation of men want in a suit. Tom is my tailor here in Melbourne and influences the #menswear crowd daily.Australia's version of Paul Stewart (and a stockist of C. Kimber Footwear), now with new leadership. I really look forward to seeing what's to come from this iconic Australian menswear emporium.A great minimalist shop I'm really hoping might be my next stockist. This is where a menswear dude gets his casual kit for the weekend. People always ask me to compare Melbourne to my life in London, but they're such different cities. One thing I've noticed is that young Australians grow up dreaming of moving to London or New York, but after a few years they always come back for the lifestyle. London is my first home, but Melbourne is turning into my second.
With its great mix of ethnicities, art, food, and style it's seen as the cultural capital of Australia and has maintained the title of the most livable city in the world for the last two years. For example, from where I live it's just a 40-minute drive to a winery, the mountains, or the beach—I've started surfing every chance I get.
